In order for you to get involved as either an online virtual Pilot or Air Traffic Controller, we need to get you started at the beginning.
To do anything within the VATSIM/VATSAF community, you need to get registered as a user (whether an ATC or Pilot, or both). Why get registered you may ask? Well, this is as a protection mechanism for both yourself, and other members. We don’t want people to gain access to the community who might have some ulterior motives, whatever they might be. But mainly we need to know who you are in order to keep you informed of what’s happening.
VATSIM
So, lets start.
First, you will need to register with our world-wide governing body, VATSIM. www.VATSIM.net
The registration process is very simple and straight forward. Feel free to read about the organisation while you are on the website. This is after all the body that we fall under. Very important, on the registration page select “Africa/Middle East” for your preferred region. Once registered you will need to request a transfer to a specific region, choose VATSAF. The registration process will require you to follow the link inside the automatically generated email in order to complete the process, and finally you will receive an email that confirms your Registration Number, as well as your Password (for use on the VATSIM website). Please keep this last email in a safe place, as you might need it in time.
Once you have requested a transfer to VATSAF you now need to register on our website (www.vatsaf.com)

Right! First part done.
With your VATSIM Username (it’s a number), you can register as a user on our website (www.VATSAF.com). If VATSIM does not guide you back to this site as a South African user, no sweat, just follow the REGISTER shortcut on the main VATSAF page.
The registration page, again, is very straight forward. Fill it in being very careful to Register using the Registration number you got from VATSIM, and remember to scroll down to the country that YOU are in. You will also now choose your OWN password for this website. Rather don’t use the same one that VATSIM generated for you.
After you have submitted this registration, you will again be sent an email, confirming your registration, and requiring you to follow the link (in the body of the email) in order to complete the registration process.
It sounds like a lot, we know, but it really is for everyone’s protection.
Now, all the registrations and form filling and email sending and receiving...is complete! Welcome to VATSAF!
